We all remember the specs when released from Tesla at the reveal. For a semi truck the specs were impressive for sure. Tesla’s mission was to make a game changer product that would perform and benefit the owners primarily with ROI.
For Daimlers CEO Martin Daum, he had other thoughts on his upcoming competitor. He told Business Insider:
“They’re fun, it’s an interesting market. We take every competitor seriously, Tesla has proved they really have the tenacity to really go through huge losses to capture the market,” Daum told Business Insider.
“But trucking is a difficult business. They will learn the hard way, trucking is not like passenger cars where one size fits all. There’s a lot of variety in trucking…the United States is a highly competitive market, so as I said, they’re fun.”
Daum even had a comment about Tesla breaking the laws of physics if their specs are true. Interesting comment to say the least. Lets recap on what the Tesla Semi can do:
Acceleration 0-60 mph with 80k lb: 20 sec
Speed up a 5% Grade: 60 mph
Mile Range: 300 or 500 miles
Powertrain: 4 Independent Motors on Rear Axles
Energy Consumption: Less than 2 kWh per mile
Fuel Savings: $200,000+
Daum does not sound impressed with Tesla’s semi and in fact has been working on electric truck projects of its own. With the launch of the eCascadia semi truck, Daimler is looking to compete with the new kid on the block.
Its understood that the eCasdadia trucks can compete but still lack in range when compared to Tesla’s Semi. Elon even commented that the production semi trucks may have an even longer range.
We hope that Elon meets his deadline of 2019 for target release of the Semi, but we all know how Elon is with deadlines. Daimler already is releasing electric trucks, including the smaller Freightliner
Overall, we look forward to seeing the new Tesla Semi on the freeways soon!
